Now in its eleventh year in Australia, the 2011 Serbian Film Festival brings together a selection of eight of the latest feature films from the unique cinema of Serbia to audiences across Australia. The majority of the movies were released in this year (2011) and they all cover a wide range of topics and genres with irresistible appeal to young and old.
The film White White World (Beli beli svet) is a story of crime and passion set against the backdrop of Bor, a once-glorious industrial town , the centre of gold and other precious metal mining in Serbia - now in depression and decay.
Meanwhile, White Lions (Beli lavovi) takes a lighter look at the trials and tribulations faced by a group of present-day Serbs in a country buffeted by waves of war and economic, social and political change.
Together with the film O Gringo (Veliki stranac), which tells the biographical story about a Serbian-born soccer player who became one of the greatest soccer players in Brazil, the Festival covers the whole gamut of stories and emotions.
The Festival opens in Sydney on the 17th of October with the hugely popular The Smell of Rain in the Balkans (Miris kiše na Balkanu), an enchanting period drama based on the award-wining family saga by Gordana Kuic.
Aleksandra Bibic, one of the lead actresses from this film, is the Special Guest of the Festival this year and will officially open the Festival in Sydney. Following this she will accompany the Festival on its tour around the country. Miss Bibic, 19th guest of the Festival, is a talented rising star in the Serbian film scene who began her career as the youngest ballet soloist in the National Theatre of Belgrade before embarking on a successful film and television career.
Over the following two weeks the 2011 Serbian Film Festival travels to Canberra, Wollongong, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and this year for the first time to Brisbane.
